CKMCC

The Central Kentucky Medical Correctional Complex (CKMCC) is a Level 4 correctional institution located in Lexington, Kentucky. Construction of the facility began in 2023, with operations scheduled to commence in November 2026.

CKMCC is a specialized correctional institution designed to provide comprehensive medical and behavioral health services for incarcerated individuals with complex healthcare needs. The institution consists of three distinct housing units, each serving a specific population.

General Population Unit

The General Population Unit is a 72-bed housing unit that houses incarcerated individuals who are medically and mentally stable enough to work within the institution. These individuals perform essential institutional jobs that support the daily operation of the facility, including food service, sanitation, maintenance, laundry, and other work assignments.

Medical Unit

The Medical Unit is a 109-bed housing unit dedicated to incarcerated individuals who require ongoing medical treatment, nursing care, or specialized clinical services that cannot be provided at other correctional institutions. The unit provides advanced healthcare services, including on-site chemotherapy, dialysis, chronic disease management, and other specialized medical treatments, allowing patients to receive care in a secure correctional setting.

Correctional Psychiatric Treatment Unit (CPTU)

The Correctional Psychiatric Treatment Unit (CPTU) is a 172-bed housing unit that provides intensive behavioral health services for incarcerated individuals experiencing serious mental illness or significant cognitive impairment. The CPTU includes several specialized treatment areas:

  • Intensive Treatment Unit – Provides structured, multidisciplinary treatment for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who require intensive psychiatric intervention.
  • Stabilization Unit – Serves individuals experiencing an acute mental health crisis who require short-term stabilization before transitioning to a less restrictive treatment environment.
  • Mental Health Programming Unit – Provides therapeutic programming, counseling, and evidence-based interventions to promote recovery, improve functioning, and prepare individuals for successful transition to other correctional settings.
  • Memory Care Unit – Serves aging incarcerated individuals with dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or other cognitive disorders by providing specialized care in a safe, supportive, and structured environment.

Together, these housing units enable CKMCC to serve as the Kentucky Department of Corrections' primary institution for specialized medical and behavioral healthcare, ensuring that incarcerated individuals receive appropriate treatment while maintaining institutional safety and security.

CKMCC is 231,000 sq feet in total. The physical plant at CKMCC is unique, in that it is all one building. There are 172 offenders housed for mental health treatment, 109 offenders housed for medical treatment and 72 general population offenders.
