Oerther started her career with the Department of Corrections in 2006 as a correctional officer at Roederer Correctional Complex (RCC). Shortly thereafter, she promoted to a classification and treatment officer in the institution's Assessment Center and later in the Minimum Security Unit. In 2016, she promoted to a unit administrator I at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women (KCIW).

Most recently, Oerther held the position of unit administrator II at KCIW where she worked as the grievance coordinator and oversaw the Assessment Center and program dormitory. Additionally, she served as a PREA investigator at the institution.

A graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Oerther earned her bachelor's degree in economics in 1997. She went on to obtain a master's degree in public administration from the University of Kentucky in 1999. Oerther is a long-standing member of the Kentucky Council on Crime and Delinquency (KCCD). She was named the RCC Employee of the Quarter in 2010 and KCIW Supervisor of the Quarter in 2020.
