Thompson began his career as a correctional officer in 2001 at KSP where he promoted through the ranks. During a previous role as shift commander, Thompson led the institution through multiple critical incidents that included numerous staff assaults, riots, escape attempts, natural disasters and major power outages. In 2017 he was promoted to major when he began an initiative to recruit correctional officers via social media. His efforts resulted in the institution's vacancy rate being drastically lowered, which also led to a reduction in overtime. He continues to utilize the social media page to recruit staff and recognize outstanding employee performances.

Thompson is the recipient of the 2014 Achievement Award for KSP and the 2017 DOC Hero Award. He has served on both the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team during his career.
