Byron Masden began his career at GRCC as a correctional officer in 2007 and promoted to recreation leader the​ next year. In 2017, he promoted to recreation to supervisor before promoting again to unit administrator in 2018. As a unit administrator he oversaw the general population, minimum-security, and segregation units. In 2019 he promoted to major. 

Masden was a member of the GRCC Corrections Emergency Response Team from 2008 to 2019, where he served as squad leader, assistant commander, and commander. He is also a weapons and chemical instructor and a member of the state firearms committee. Masden is a 2016 graduate of the Western Region iLead Program.
